An outstanding garden variety. This reliable dark leaved, hardy leek produces thick, long stems which have excellent flavour.
High yielding they can be lifted from October right though to February. Porbella shows good tolerance to rust and is slow to bolt, standing well in the ground until harvest.
Sow indoors: March-May, in trays or individual cell modules of seed compost. Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 15oC. Seedlings appear 14-21 days. Remove cover when seedlings appear. If necessary transplant to further cells or trays. Stand outside for a few days from late May (avoid frosts). When 10cm tall transplant into holes 15cm apart with 30cm between rows.
